2024 draft picks

Latham – Few teams had a greater need at offensive tackle than the Titans. With Joe Alt not on the field, Tennessee named Latham the best remaining tackle. The Alabama product is a towering physical presence, weighing 343 pounds with arms more than 35 inches long, and he posted a pass-blocking grade above 80.0 in consecutive seasons to finish his college career.

sweat – Between JC Latham and T'Vondre Sweat, the Titans gained significant size within the first 40 picks. When he was on the field, Sweat was extremely productive last season at Texas. He earned a grade above 90.0 as both a run defender and a pass rusher, ranking first among all FBS defensive tackles in PFF's Wins Above Average metric. He had slipped off the boards leading up to the draft following a DWI arrest and off-field/conditioning questions, but Tennessee was clearly comfortable enough with those concerns to take him at the top of the second round.

Gray – Gray is the best defender of the run, as his 90 run stops over the past two seasons rank first among all Power Five players at the position. His 85.5 PFF grade since 2022 ranks third among ACC linebackers.

Brownlee – Brownlee plays aggressively against the run and pass and posted an elite run defense grade of 92.9 over the last three seasons. At Louisville he played primarily outside, but his competitiveness and physicality could make him an impact player in the nickel spot sooner rather than later.

Jackson- Jackson, a speedy receiver from Tulane, hasn't produced much in his career but has averaged over 2.2 yards per route run and 17 yards per catch over the past two seasons. Jackson has homered three punts in his career, giving him a good chance to stick at the next level if he can stay healthy.

Williams – Williams is a solid player who could make an impact on special teams once he is drafted here. He earned a grade of 85.5 in 2023 and was the only Power Five safety to earn a PFF grade above 85.0 in each of the last two seasons.

Harrell – Harrell is ranked No. 196 on the PFF Big Board and is a solid draft choice for the Titans. Harrell had solid performances at the Reese's Senior Bowl, but none of his performances are more famous than the first-and-10 in late November 2023 against the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he disrupted QB Kyle McCord to force an interception.

Rookie Spotlight: T JC Latham, Alabama

Scouting summary

Physically, Latham is a dream offensive tackle who is well above the 50th percentile at the position in height, weight and length. Yet he moves like a player 40 pounds lighter. His foot speed and coordination are impressive. He has the flexibility to sit deep on the offensive line for good leverage.

He is a true people mover in zone and gap concepts and a devastating combo blocker. He shows good hand usage and hand speed to bait pass rushers and reset his hands after hand fights. He sometimes has a hard time anchoring himself in pass protection, with his worst plays coming against strong bull rushes over the last two years.

Victories above average

WAA represents the number of wins a player is worth over the average college football player and is a metric that evaluators can use to evaluate performance.

It combines a player's performance in each area of play (using PFF ratings) and the value each area of play has in winning football games. The result is a unique metric that enables cross-position evaluation and predicts future value at the player and team level.

Latham's Wins Above Average (WAA) since 2021.
How Latham ranks in the stable metrics
Latham's percentile is among the most stable blocking stats since 2021.

Latham's reliability is extremely impressive as he has not missed a single game in the last two seasons. His 80.8 pass block grade on true pass sets is excellent, and what's even more impressive is that he achieved it on nearly 550 snaps.

He will benefit from participating in a zone scheme at the next level, as he was positive on 16% of those plays. And while he played the vast majority of his career snaps at right tackle, he also played 125 snaps at right guard, which also gave him some versatility.

The final result

Latham is an offensive lineman who isn't seen often. He will only be 21 years old during his rookie season, but he has two years of starting experience in the SEC.

Although Latham has conceded 18 penalties over the past two years and has room for improvement in some parts of the position, his rare combination of size, speed and finesse makes him a first-round trench player.
